Romans 13:13 Explained

Introduction: A Biblical Call to Christian Living

“Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy” (Romans 13:13). In this powerful verse, the apostle Paul gives a direct command about how Christians should live. Importantly, Paul is not addressing unbelievers or pagans—he is speaking to Roman Christians. His message remains just as relevant today: followers of Christ are called to live distinct lives marked by holiness, integrity, and light.

Understanding Romans 13:13: Six Sins Christians Must Avoid

Paul identifies six specific sins that have no place in the life of a believer. These sins fall into two clear categories, revealing both outward actions and inward attitudes that oppose Christian character.

1. Public Sins That Bring Disgrace

The first three sins—revelry, drunkenness, and lewdness—are outward behaviors often associated with moral excess and public shame. These actions typically thrive under the cover of darkness and represent a lifestyle driven by pleasure rather than obedience to God.

For Christians, these behaviors contradict the call to live honorably and reflect Christ in everyday life.

2. Hidden Sins of the Human Heart

The next three sins—lust, strife, and envy—are often concealed within the heart before becoming visible. Though less obvious, they are equally destructive.

  • Lust distorts God-given desires

  • Strife disrupts peace and unity

  • Envy breeds resentment and bitterness

These sins quietly erode spiritual health and damage Christian relationships and testimony.

Sins of the Night vs. Children of the Day

Paul refers to these behaviors as “sins of the night,” symbolizing spiritual darkness and separation from God. In contrast, Christians are called to live in the light. This truth is reinforced in 1 Thessalonians 5:5: “You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.” Believers are not meant to blend into the darkness of the world but to stand apart as children of the light.

Why Holy Living Matters in a Dark World

One of Paul’s central points is clear: Christians cannot impact the world if they live just like it. When believers compromise their values, their witness loses credibility and power. Christian living is not about legalism—it is about reflecting the transforming work of Christ. Living in the light allows believers to shine truth, hope, and love in a world desperately in need of God.

Walking Properly: A Daily Christian Commitment

Romans 13:13 is more than a warning; it is a call to purposeful living. Walking properly means rejecting both visible sins and hidden heart issues while pursuing a life that honors God. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to:

  • Live openly and honestly

  • Guard our hearts and actions

  • Walk in holiness and love

  • Reflect the light of Christ daily

Conclusion: Live as Children of the Light

Paul’s message is timeless. Christians are sons and daughters of the day, not of darkness. By walking in the light, we demonstrate who we truly are in Christ and point others toward Him.May we choose each day to live distinctly, walk properly, and shine brightly—bringing glory to God and hope to a dark world.
